New Striim Release Further Bolsters SQL-based Streaming and Database Connectivity for Kafka

End-to-End, SQL-based Streaming Data Platform Simplifies and Speeds Delivery of Kafka-driven Analytics Applications; Augments Exactly Once Processing Guarantees

PALO ALTO, CA, August 28, 2017 – Striim, Inc., provider of the leading end-to-end, real-time data integration and streaming analytics platform, today announced that it has launched version 3.7.4 of the Striim platform, bolstering its ease of use, connectivity, manageability, and scalability for delivering streaming analytics applications involving Apache Kafka.

The Striim platform’s enterprise-grade, Apache Kafka integration and SQL-based Kafka data processing has been generally available for several product releases, and boasts numerous deployments among Fortune 500 customers. These customers are using the Striim solution to enable high-volume, high-velocity data correlation and analytics involving Kafka data, along with other enterprise data sources. Based on input from these production customers, Striim has further strengthened the platform’s ease-of-use, connectivity, manageability, and scalability in support of Kafka-related deployments.

“It’s a daunting challenge, integrating multiple tiers when building Streaming Applications with Kafka as an underlying message store. Striim makes that problem go away,” said Alok Pareek, co-founder and EVP of Products at Striim. “For several years, Striim has been the leader in defining an integrated Streaming Data Platform that includes not just Kafka, but also SQL-based applications and universal connectivity with a wide variety of event delivery semantics. With the 3.7.4 release, we have added Kafka diagnostic utilities, advanced monitoring metrics, and additional connectors to reduce the complexity of managing Kafka in production environments.”

Striim 3.7.4 introduces new utilities specifically designed to speed the adoption of Kafka as part of an end-to-end flow. These utilities help users quickly and easily scale Kafka applications by gathering baseline performance metrics for real world applications that involve parsing, formatting, buffer management, and external connectivity. These enhancements in the Kafka producer, consumer, and broker metrics help increase the monitoring, manageability and scalability of Kafka streaming applications.

SQL-query-based processing and analytics, a drag-and-drop UI, configuration wizards, and custom utilities such as these make the Striim platform the easiest solution to deliver end-to-end streaming integration and analytics applications involving Kafka.

In addition, Striim has bolstered the platform’s connectivity with hundreds of data sources and targets to include a new real-time Smart NetFlow Reader. The Striim Cloud Readiness offering for Kafka has also been expanded, enabling writing from Kafka queues to AWS Redshift and S3, Google Cloud, and several Microsoft Azure solutions including Azure SQL Server, Azure Storage, and Azure HDInsight.

In the area of Kafka stream processing, Striim has augmented its solution’s Exactly Once Processing (E1P) guarantees across the data pipeline, spanning the entire end-to-end streaming architecture. Because Apache Kafka is built into the Striim platform, a parallel Kafka stream can act as an intermediary persistent store, helping to ensure that users are processing and writing data once and only once.

About Striim + Apache Kafka

The Striim platform offers end-to-end, real-time data integration and streaming analytics across all aspects of streaming data management, including Kafka. With the Striim solution, companies can continuously ingest from Kafka as a data source, and/or continuously write to Kafka as a target. The Striim offering also ships with Apache Kafka built into the platform, allowing Kafka to become transparent to the user, and its capabilities harnessed without having to code APIs.

TechTarget Q&A: What you need to know about real-time streaming analytics

“End-of-day batch processing is great for understanding what happened yesterday. Real-time streaming analytics provides up-to-the-millisecond intelligence.” This is how Joel Shore, news writer for TechTarget’s SearchCloudApplications site, highlights the benefits of real-time streaming analytics as opposed to traditional methods in his Q&A session with Steve Wilkes, founder and CTO of Striim.

Life moves at an event-driven pace, not batch capture, so being armed with information the moment data is created is important, especially in fast-paced environments such as finance and retail where the data is only actionable for so long.

One standout conversational topic in the interview is when Steve talks about the importance of in-memory processing for streaming analytics. Based on the incredible amount of data the world is generating today, it’s no longer feasible to store data and analyze it later. Steve states, “When you think about real-time processing, you have to decide: What is it that I need to know right now, and what is it about my data that could make it volatile or perishable?”

Rather than landing on disk fist, in-memory computing (IMC) allows companies to gain insights from their data while it’s streaming before it loses operational value, thus allowing for critical data-driven decision-making.

While at Cloud Expo, Steve presented a track entitled, “Streaming Analytics at the Intersection of IoT, Enterprise and Cloud: Four Case Studies.” Following this session, Joel and Steve discussed at length how streaming analytics can be used in environments such as cloud, on-premise and at the edge. In their Q&A, they further discuss the flexibility and integration of streaming analytics in these digital environments.

With memory costs dropping and processing growing more powerful, streaming analytics is the evolutionary next step in data management. Learn more about what Steve has to say by reading this Q&A: What You Need to Know About Real-Time Streaming Analytics.

Cloud Computing: Data Striim-ing for Real-time Actionable Business Intelligence

In a feature article on Cloud Computing Magazine, Steve Wilkes spoke with TMCNet’s Eric Linask about the capabilities of Striim and how our platform is helping modernize the way enterprise companies interact and use data to drive actionable business intelligence – all in real time.

An important element of the conversation pertained to the current adoption and future direction of data management. With data being born from a variety of sources, Steve discussed how the storage and analysis of these volumes of data is one of the main obstacles in providing access to real-time business information.

The world is producing more data than can be physically stored, so it’s critical for enterprise companies to 1) ingest and store only the most relevant information, and 2) gain insights on this data before it loses operational value.

To put it in perspective, Steve provided this great consumer analogy on the navigation app, Waze:

“‘Imagine sitting in traffic for several hours, then getting home and receiving an email or alert telling you there was an accident three hours ago and try a different route,’ he says. ‘That’s not very useful.’”

This same concept applies to the enterprise – companies need to be able to act on their data while it’s relevant, and a “streaming-first” approach is the only logical way to do this moving forward.

Striim Ranked #1 in Bay Area News Group’s 2017 Top Workplaces Award

Company earns top spot in Small Companies category of annual award

PALO ALTO, CA, June 27, 2017 – Striim, provider of the leading end-to-end, real-time data integration and intelligence platform, today announced it has been awarded the #1 ranking in the Small Companies category of the 2017 Top Workplaces award by the Bay Area News Group. This year, the Small Companies category includes 45 of the top organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Top Workplaces lists are based solely on the results of an employee feedback survey administered by WorkplaceDynamics, LLC, a leading research firm that specializes in organizational health and workplace improvement. Several aspects of workplace culture were measured, including Alignment, Execution, and Connection, just to name a few.

“It is truly an honor to be recognized as the #1 small company to work for in the Bay Area by an organization as well-regarded as the Bay Area News Group,” said Katherine Rincon, SVP of Marketing at Striim. “There is an enormous amount of respect and admiration among the Striim Team. We genuinely believe in the solution we’re providing, and thoroughly enjoy working together (and celebrating together) to make the Striim vision a reality.”

“The Top Workplaces award is not a popularity contest. And oftentimes, people assume it’s all about fancy perks and benefits.” says Doug Claffey, CEO of WorkplaceDynamics. “But to be a Top Workplace, organizations must meet our strict standards for organizational health. And who better to ask about work life than the people who live the culture every day—the employees. Time and time again, our research has proven that what’s most important to them is a strong belief in where the organization is headed, how it’s going to get there, and the feeling that everyone is in it together. Claffey adds, “Without this sense of connection, an organization doesn’t have a shot at being named a Top Workplace.”

Esgyn Corporation and Striim Partner to Make Offloading Workloads from Expensive Transactional Systems to Hadoop Quick and Easy

MILPITAS, Calif. and PALO ALTO, Calif., May 23, 2017 – Esgyn Corporation, the leader in Converged Big Data solutions that empower global enterprises to realize the potential of Big Data, has partnered with Striim, provider of an end-to-end, real-time data integration and streaming analytics platform, to deliver a solution that combines the power of EsgynDB with Striim’s Change Data Capture (CDC) capabilities, which together enables workloads to be offloaded from expensive transactional systems to Hadoop.

Today, enterprises are deploying, or have deployed, their data lakes on Hadoop, but are challenged by how to access the data stored in the lake in meaningful ways, or they are struggling to realize the promised return on their data lake investments.  Meanwhile, ever growing user and customer demands for access to data in near real-time is putting immense pressure on IT departments to service these demands from their expensive transactional systems.  The demands on the traditional transactional data stores are pushing these systems to their limits, both the limits of scale, and the limits of IT budgets.

The solution is to service these new and growing demands directly from the data lake, by offloading the work from traditional systems.  The challenge is twofold: 1) how to keep the data lake up to date, and 2) how to easily access that data.  Together the Striim platform and EsgynDB solve both these challenges with an enterprise ready solution, making workload offloading a reality.

Striim provides a non-intrusive, end-to-end solution for moving change data from traditional transactional systems to EsgynDB, ensuring your data lake is up to date in milliseconds. CDC, as facilitated by Striim and EsgynDB, applies ACID transactions in a consistent way.  That is, a transaction on the source can include multiple updates to multiple tables and this transaction is applied consistently in EsgynDB.

EsgynDB, a massively parallel enterprise class SQL-on-Hadoop database, brings all the power of a traditional RDBMS to Hadoop.  EsgynDB enables you to easily access your data lake with whatever queries your workloads demand, from transactions, to reporting, to BI, and analytics, all at the same time.

“Striim is excited to partner with Esgyn to deliver transactional data into EsgynDB. Deployed together, Esgyn’s relational engine on Hadoop and Striim’s real-time data integration capabilities – including low impact CDC – allow for real-time data flows from mission critical applications into enterprise data lakes,” said Sami Akbay, Founder and EVP at Striim. “The combined solution removes complexity from Big Data integration projects and helps developers rapidly build and deploy next generation streaming and big data applications.”

“The power of these two technologies and these two companies coming together provides enterprises with an extremely attractive solution that helps realize the promised ROI of the enterprise data lake,”  said Hong Ding, CEO of Esgyn.

Striim Introduces Enterprise-Grade Data Management Solution to Address Data Challenges of the Internet of Things (IoT)

Platform integrates IoT data and analytics with the enterprise for context-rich, real-time insights and IoT security

PALO ALTO, CA, May 16, 2017 – Striim, provider of the leading end-to-end, real-time data integration and intelligence platform, today introduced Striim for IoT, a comprehensive streaming data management solution for the Internet of Things (IoT). Striim for IoT helps companies address three of the most difficult data challenges of IoT infrastructure: 1) managing the tsunami of data generated by IoT devices, 2) integrating IoT data with the enterprise and analyzing it in real time, and 3) addressing security issues associated with the explosion of connected devices. Through enterprise-grade, real-time data integration combined with streaming analytics and visualization, Striim enables IoT-driven companies to make fast, informed decisions based on context-rich, real-time insights.

Managing the Tsunami of IoT Data Through Real-Time Edge Processing

In a recent white paper, IDC predicts that, over the next 8 years, the amount of data created per year will increase 10X to over 160 zettabytes – with 95% originating from the world of IoT. However, the study also indicates that only a very small fraction of that data can be stored.

In its simplest use case, the Striim platform enables immediate in-flight filtering, transformation and aggregation of IoT data at the edge. This allows businesses to store only the IoT data they need, and to extend the value of existing storage investments.

Integrating IoT Data and Analytics with the Enterprise

“Even though many companies are using edge analytics for their IoT data, they are really limiting themselves by evaluating and acting on siloed data,” said Steve Wilkes, founder and CTO of Striim. “There are many other sources of data to be considered, such as transactional data, log files, message queues and events, that, when correlated with IoT data, can provide a well-rounded view for decision makers within a company.”

Business operations that leverage IoT devices are not driven solely by IoT data. As such, Striim enables companies to integrate massive volumes of sensor and device data in real time with a wide variety of streaming data sources across the enterprise, and perform streaming data processing and analytics wherever it makes most sense for the business – at the edge, on-premise, or in the cloud. This all occurs while data is in-flight, before the information loses operational value, becoming less relevant and actionable. The resulting timely and context-rich insights enable management to make informed decisions and take necessary actions to achieve key objectives such as improving operational efficiency, driving intelligent innovation, and counteracting IoT-related security threats.

Introducing Striim Edge Controller

As a key component of Striim for IoT, Striim is pleased to preview Striim Edge Controller, a new management and monitoring framework that allows users to easily manage hundreds of edge servers in a scalable fashion. With Striim Edge Controller, users can build and modify edge processing and analytics flows in the Striim Server, and easily push them to any edge servers they choose. Similarly, via the Striim Server, users can easily monitor the status of the Striim platform running on edge servers, and gain a comprehensive real-time view of their streaming integration and analytics solution for IoT.

Intelligent Edge Processing of IoT Data

Intelligent processing and analytics of IoT data at the Edge is possible through Striim’s integration with the Azure IoT Gateway SDK in conjunction with the Striim Edge Server, as well as with Azure IoT Hub as a target. Both integrations support real-time pre-processing and analysis of massive volumes of IoT data in order to eliminate irrelevant data from moving upstream.

As IoT data volumes grow, filtering and pre-processing is crucial to avoid ingesting more data than can be processed. Edge processing enables companies to filter out repetitive and normal data, aggregate multiple data streams, and enrich data with context at the source, helping them extract the signal from the noise. Companies can also perform fast-path analytics and anomaly detection at the edge that can trigger events or actions in devices without having to reach the Cloud.

Advanced Cloud-Hosted IoT Analytics

Striim further integrates with Azure Event Hubs to enable fast post-analysis of IoT data in the Cloud. Striim is able to aggregate and correlate data from the Azure IoT Hub with contextual data and other real-time streams in the Cloud to deliver real-time intelligence. This intelligence can be used to determine faults in manufacturing processes or materials, anomalies in energy distribution, and inefficiencies in factory floor operations, for example. Pattern matching, alerting, workflow triggers, and continuous push-based visualizations ensure companies can immediately take advantage of this intelligence.

This week, over 250,000 visitors will converge on Hannover, Germany to discover the latest trends and solutions surrounding the Integrated Industry, Industrie 4.0 and Smart Factory. The foundation for this modern industrial revolution is the Internet of Things (IoT), which allows the direct connection of all production and logistics devices and processes. The objective is to make industries more intelligent, efficient and secure, none of which is possible without the real-time edge processing and cloud-based analysis of the whitewater flood of IoT data.

On the heels of Striim’s mega release of version 3.6, Striim further underscores its commitment to seamless integration with Big Data and Cloud environments with this release.

CDC WizardsHighlights include integrations with MapR, Kafka 0.9 and Google BigQuery. Striim is also pleased to launch the Hazelcast Striim Hot Cache, announced separately.

“In this release, we have further strengthened our leadership position as an end-to-end streaming platform. Striim’s ability to transcend on-prem, cloud and IoT environments in real time is what sets us apart,” said Alok Pareek, founder and EVP of Products at Striim. “These types of new integrations with Big Data and Cloud technologies, combined with enhancements for Kafka security and ease-of-use, further accelerate our product capabilities.”

Big Data Integration

Striim’s support for Big Data has been enhanced to include integration with MapR DB and MapR Streams as a target. Companies can now leverage Striim’s change data capture (CDC) and multi-stream correlation capabilities to capture data from enterprise databases, process that data in real time, and then load that data to either MapR DB or MapR Streams. Support for MapR rounds out Striim’s Big Data Integration offering, with existing support for HDFS, Hadoop, and Cloudera as data sources and targets. In addition, Striim is pleased to announce the availability of the Hazelcast Striim Hot Cache, helping companies ensure, in real time, that their cache is always in-sync with their database. Hazelcast is a leading provider of operational in-memory computing, with tens of thousands of installed clusters and over 16 million server starts per month. More details can be found in this separate announcement: Hazelcast Striim Hot Cache – Reducing Windows of Inconsistency to Milliseconds.

Template-based CDC Wizards

With Striim’s continuous focus on ease-of-use, the company has added twelve additional Change Data Capture (CDC) Wizards. These Wizards speed deployment of streaming solutions that require moving enterprise data from a variety of databases (including Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL and HPE NonStop), into these newly supported Big Data and Cloud environments (MapR, Hazelcast, and Google BigQuery). Support for Kafka Security Features The Striim platform now takes advantage of the security features introduced in Apache Kafka v0.9. With this support, companies are able to authenticate end-users via either Kerberos or TLS client certificates. This gives them visibility into who, exactly, is making a request. In addition, Striim customers can leverage the UNIX-like permissions system to control which end-users are authorized to access which data. Finally, Striim’s embedded Kafka implementation supports SSL encryption over the wire to protect sensitive data on questionable networks.

Infrastructure Enhancements

To facilitate troubleshooting and debugging, the Striim event log which contains important cluster information is now available visually, simplifying search.

Finally, a new JMX-based monitoring feature enables the Striim platform to connect to third-party monitoring products using the JMX API, exposing Striim statistics through message beans.

Hot Cache

Hazelcast Striim Hot Cache – Reducing Windows of Inconsistency to Milliseconds

Joint hot cache solution enables real-time, push-based cache synchronization with its underlying database

Palo Alto, Calif., November 3, 2016Hazelcast, the leading open source in-memory data grid (IMDG) with hundreds of thousands of installed clusters and over 16 million server starts per month, and Striim, provider of the only end-to-end, real-time data integration and streaming analytics platform, today announced the launch of the Hazelcast Striim Hot Cache. This integration enables real-time, push-based propagation of changes from the database to the cache. For organizations that manage high volumes of data, Hazelcast Striim Hot Cache ensures continuous synchronization between the cache and its underlying database, providing consistency with the system of record.

With Hazelcast Striim Hot Cache, companies are able to reduce the latency of propagation of data from a backend database into a Hazelcast cache to milliseconds. This provides organizations with the flexibility to run multiple applications off a single database, keeping Hazelcast cache refreshes up-to-date while adhering to low latency SLAs.

Traditionally, if there is a one-to-one relationship between an application and its underlying database, and no other applications or systems are able to make changes to that database, then the intermediary cache stays in-sync with the database. However, if changes are made to the database directly by other applications, then data held in the cache immediately becomes stale.

A common workaround to this problem is “time to live” or TTL. This is when companies purge documents from the cache after a period of time. For many this is a “near enough” solution. However, the process lowers cache efficiency and is inadequate for businesses that manage high transaction data or need to maintain high levels of customer experience.CDC Wizard

Hazelcast Striim Hot Cache leverages Striim’s Change Data Capture (CDC) functionality to capture changes in the underlying database in real time (within milliseconds), and push just those changes instantly to the cache. Through CDC, Striim is able to recognize which tables and key values have changed. Striim immediately captures these changes with their table and key, and, using the Hazelcast Striim writer, pushes those changes into the cache.

The full data for the change is available to Striim. An Object Relational configuration is provided for each cache, so that the changes can be applied to the domain model in Hazelcast. These changes can be inserts, updates and deletes. During transformation, Striim can also perform data enrichment (joining CDC updates with other data, or performing aggregation and more complex processing) before writing the Object to the cache.

Striim offers a CDC Wizard to speed deployment. Users can quickly configure the capture of change data from a variety of databases (including Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL and HPE NonStop), and propagate that data to their Hazelcast cache. No configuration is required in Hazelcast.

“Having a cache that’s out-of-sync with its underlying database can have dramatic consequences for important transactional data, perishable real-time data, or customer experience,” said Ali Kutay, Chairman, President and CEO of Striim. “We are delighted to work with Hazelcast to reduce the latency of their refreshes to milliseconds by integrating our real-time data integration products, including change data capture, with their cache.”

“Caching data in-memory is well proven in speeding up and scaling applications. But holding that extra copy of data creates a synchronization issue,” said Greg Luck, CEO of Hazelcast. “The Hazelcast Striim Hot Cache solves the most difficult form of this problem – the case where other applications are also updating the database being cached. We are very excited to be bringing this critical enterprise solution to market.”
