Alerting in Striim

Alerts notify you when a Striim server or data pipeline requires attention. Striim Platform provides three types of alerts.

  • Smart alerts are predefined, system-wide alerts for common operational conditions, such as application backpressure, high server CPU usage, or an idle source. Only Striim administrators can manage Smart Alerts. For more information, see Managing Smart Alerts.Managing Smart Alerts

  • Custom alerts monitor conditions that you define for selected resources. You can create an alert for a server, Forwarding Agent, connection profile, application, or pipeline component. The Striim administrator and other non-admin users who are enabled to manage alerting can use this feature. However, custom alerts for Striim services and Forwarding Agents remain restricted to administrators. See Managing custom alerts.Managing custom alerts

  • Application-generated alerts monitor data or business conditions defined in application logic, such as a field value exceeding a specified limit. These alerts apply to the data processed by a specific application and are not configured in Alert Manager. See Sending alerts from applications.

Receiving alert notifications

You can receive alert notifications from Striim in the Striim web UI, by email, by Slack, or by Microsoft Teams. The administrator must configure the Striim server to send notifications using these channels.

Automate workflows using alert notifications

You can use alert notifications to automatically create support tickets and route them to the right team. Configure rules in your email system, or in a workflow automation tool that supports your email system, Slack, or Microsoft Teams.

When you configure alerts and notification channels, Striim automatically includes the product name and cluster name in Smart Alert and custom alert notifications:

  • Email: The subject begins with the cluster name. The message body begins with the product name and cluster name, followed by the alert message.

  • Slack and Microsoft Teams: The message begins with the product name and cluster name, followed by the alert message.

If the name is unavailable, Striim omits it, and the notification includes only the product name. If you have existing rules that match the full subject line of alert emails, update them to account for the added name.

Application-generated alerts do not include these details. Their notifications contain only the content defined in the application's TQL (see Sending alerts from applications).

For example, you can configure a rule that matches the cluster name payments-prod and the product name Striim Platform, creates a support ticket, and assigns it to the Payments Operations team. Include the alert message and other available details in the ticket to help the team investigate.
